Longbow Bomber

The (fictional) F/A-76 Longbow is a torpedo bomber deployed by the Confederation in the Wing Commander computer game. The bomber was deployed in the 2660s during the Kilrathi War. The Longbow proved to be an excellent torpedo bomber but she was somewhat vulnerable on her runs even with her large missile load despite her heavy shielding and thick armor. Thus, she required escort to survive on the way to (and during) torpedo runs; later Confederation bombers would have much-improved defensive armament to reduce the workload on the escorts. The F/A-76A was the initial version and was armed with two plasma cannon, two neutron guns and a rear particle turret. Sixteen anti-fighter missiles could be carried (usually eight IFF and eight heatseekers) plus four torpedoes. The F/A-76B was the postwar version and replaced the neutron guns with ion cannon. In addition, the heatseekers were replaced with image recognition missiles. Some highly-aggressive pilots chose to carry no less than sixteen IFF missiles and would fly directly into enemy squadrons and unload all of their missiles at once; the tactic is not recommended but can be most effective (if somewhat wasteful). The sheer anti-fighter missile firepower of the Longbow would not be matched until the introduction of the F-109 Vampire heavy fighter.
