Logan County, Ohio

Logan County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 46,005. Its county seat is Bellefontaine6 and is named for Benjamin Logan, who fought Indians in the area.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,209 km² (467 mi²). 1,187 km² (458 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.79% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 46,005 people, 17,956 households, and 12,730 families residing in the county. The population density is 39/km² (100/mi²). There are 21,571 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (47/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.15% White, 1.71% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 17,956 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.01. In the county, the population is spread out with 26.70% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $41,479, and the median income for a family is $47,516. Males have a median income of $37,134 versus $24,739 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,984. 9.30% of the population and 7.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.80% of those under the age of 18 and 8.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
