Lloyd Cutler

Lloyd N. Cutler is an American attorney. Cutler served as legel counsel in the Carter and Clinton presidential administrations. Born in New York City, the son of a trial lawyer, Cutler graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in 1936 and a law degree in 1939. Following his graduation from law school, Cutler clerked for Judge Charles Clark for a year before entering private practice. During World War II, he worked briefly for the U.S's Lend-Lease Administration, as an enlistee in the United States Army, and then as an intelligence analyst. He was a founding partner of the law firm Wilmer, Cutler and Pickering, specializing in international law and public policy. Cutler was legal Counsel to U.S. President Jimmy Carter, whom he met first while both served on the Trilateral Commission. He served as a special counsel and consultant to the president on the ratification of the SALT II Treaty and other international matters. Cutler also served as Counsel in Bill Clinton's presidential administration. On 6 February 2004, Cutler was appointed to the Iraq Intelligence Commission, an independent panel tasked with investigating U.S. intelligence surrounding the United States' 2003 invasion of Iraq and Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. Cutler is a married; he and his wife, Polly Kraft, have four children, three of whom are practicing lawyers.
