LlanvapleyLlanvapley is a village in Monmouthshire. It is on the B4233 4 miles from Abergavenny and 10 miles from Monmouth. Some of the residents of Llanvapley have campaigned for their local pub the Red Hart Inn to be retained as pub despite the wishes of the four generations of family who have lived there for the past 11 years to drop the loss-making commercial element of use. Although the campaign achieved success in preventing the planning change of use, there is no requirement for the pub to trade at a loss, and as such it will not be opening its doors for the foreseeable future. The website for this campaign is here http://www.savetheredhart.co.uk. While it claims to have won, are there any real victors in this sorry saga? The pub has recently been boarded up because of the threats made to the owner-occupiers in the form of poison-pen letters and abusive phone-calls, and because of previous instances of criminal damage and associated anti-social behaviour by protestors against the pub's closure. This position has disappointed some in the village. Llanvapley has a cricket team, comprising few, if any, players from the village. The cricket pitch and pavilion are in the heart of the village and are widely appreciated. Abergavenny Cricket club share the pitch and contribute to the upkeep of the square. St Mabley's church is at present not holding services because of problems with the roof and structural damage. The decision whether or not to repair is a difficult one because of the small and ever decreasing size of the congregation (average 4). The latest news is that a working group has been formed within the village to see how funding can be raised to effect repairs, and the local Community Council has made a most welcome initial contribution to the fund.
