It was recorded during their World Slavery Tour. The CD version (released in December, 1985) of this album includes everything that the first three sides of the LP version contain. The fourth side ("Wrathchild", "Children of the Damned", "22 Acacia Avenue", "Die With Your Boots On" and "Phantom of the Opera") was not included on the original release, but was released in 1998 on the remastered version. Also, "Running Free" is shortened from about 8 min 16 sec on vinyl to about 3 min 16 sec on the CD by eliminating the crowd interaction. An experienced listener can even tell where the track has been cut. The common factor between the first three sides of the LP, is that they are recorded at the Long Beach Arena in California, whereas the fourth side is recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon (now known as the Hammersmith Apollo) in London. The Live After Death video is also recorded at the Long Beach Arena, but on a different night. It contains a full gig, complete with intro and encore, and closes with "Sanctuary", which is neither on the CD nor the LP version of the album. Live After Death is generally considered to be one of the top 2 live Iron Maiden albums (the other being Rock in Rio from 2002). Whilst the sound quality isn't up to that of Rock in Rio, the track list is very good, having some of the best pre-Powerslave songs - songs that aren't played much live nowadays. Cover art The cover art was - as usual at this time - done by Derek Riggs, and pictures their mascot, Eddie rising from a grave. On that grave is a tombstone with a quote from the fantasy and horror fiction author H. P. Lovecraft's The Nameless City; "That is not dead which can eternal lie Yet with strange aeons even death can die." The proper quote is actually "And with strange..." instead of "Yet with strange...". Intro The intro before "Aces High" is a part of a speech Winston Churchill did in the House of Commons on June 4, 1940; "... We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender ..."
