Nigeria is currently divided into 36 states and 1 territory. With independence in 1960 it was divided into three regions, Northern, Western and Eastern. In 1963 two provinces of the western regions formed the newly established Mid-Western region. In 1967 the regions were split into 12 states, only the former Mid-Western region remained, only changed its status to be a state. 1976 it was reorganized to be 19 states and the newly formed Federal Capital Territory (now called Abuja). 1989 two new states were established, in 1991 31 states were formed. The latest change was in 1996, since then it has the current 36 states.
