During the period of 1801 to 1927 British monarchs reigned as King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. 1801 was the date on which Great Britain and Ireland were first merged into the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom, in the form in which it had existed since 1801, effectively came to an end when the Irish Free State seceeded from the Union in 1922. However the monarch continued to use the title King of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until 1927. In that year, under the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act, new titles were introduced for the British monarch so that he would reign as 'King of Great Britain', in Britain, and 'King of Ireland', in Ireland.
