Linux-vserver= Linux-VServer = The Linux-VServer project brings together existing Linux kernel system facilties for creating virtual private servers and security contexts. A small kernel patch is required to ensure a high degree of process separation. Each virtual server instance has its own user account database and root password. A set of tools has been developed for administering the virtual servers. Linux-Vserver has nothing in common with the similarly-named Virtual Server project. The project was started by Herbert Ptzl in Austria. Advantages - Low overheads, fast
- Ideal for separating out services that would otherwise co-exist on a server
- Low commissioning and administrative overhead
Disadvantages - All virtual servers share the same kernel (and its bugs!)
- By default, all virtual servers share the same userspace binaries
