Lightning FieldThe Lightning Field, was created by the American sculptor Walter De Maria in 1977. Located near Quemado, New Mexico, it is an important work of art of the late 20th century. It was commissioned by Dia Art Foundation which also maintains it for public viewing. It can only be visited by making an advance reservation for an overnight stay in the simple accommodations at the site. See the web site at The Lightning Field. Why visit? Although few words can adequately describe it, the sculpture exists on a scale like that of nature. Created from several hundred poles of shining stainless steel the work is laid out on a grid that is one mile by one kilometer. During a visit the tips of the grid may attract electricity from the atmosphere and provide the lucky visitor with a display of natural power. But even without a lightning show, the changing light through the day, the colors of sunset and sunrise, the passing of clouds, all give the enormous work a constantly changing appearance. Located at an elevation of about 7200 feet it can be cold at night. Visitors are permitted only from May through October. Some sense of the work can be had by viewing a photo or some delightful drawings. External Link * Mark Lindley -- Maleldil 16:42, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
