Liberty Meadows

Liberty Meadows is a syndicated comic strip created, written and illustrated by Frank Cho. It relates the comedic activities of the denizens of the titular animal sanctuary/rehabilitation clinic.

Style

Cho freely mixes visual styles in the strip, drawing the majority of the cast like Walt Kelly's anthropomorphic animals, borrowing Dave Stevens's pin-up look for Brandy, and routinely throwing in savage musclemen, apes and dinosaurs in an elaborate homage to multiple illustrators, including Barry Windsor-Smith's work on Conan the Barbarian. He also uses frequent literary and visual references from sources ranging from Michaelangelo to the movie Deliverance to commercials for Crest toothpaste.

The Humans

  • Brandy Carter - A beautiful animal psychiatrist. ("Yuck. I'm outta here. Way too much testosterone and way too little brainpower.")
  • Frank Mellish - A nerdy veterinarian. Frank is in love with Brandy but afraid to tell her. ("Good googaly moogaly!")
  • Julius - Owner of Liberty Meadows animal sanctuary and an avid fisherman. ("Khan! Khaaaan! Vengeance shall be mine!")
  • Jen - Brandy's roommate. A sexy rocket scientist who enjoys toying with men.
  • Al - Owner of the local bar where many of the other characters hang out. An educated man who believes in numerous conspiracies. ("You know, Dean, they cane people like you in Singapore.")
  • Tony - An accident prone maintenance man. ("Mental note: unplug appliance before you fix it.")
  • Roger - Brandy's ex-fiancee who's trying to win her back.

The Animals

  • Dean - A sexist pig with a drinking problem. ("I would like to do to you what Congress is doing to the American people.")
  • Ralph - A midget circus bear with a perpetual squint and a penchant for inventing dangerous gadgets. ("She didn't kick your teeth in, Dean. I'd say that's a 'maybe.' ")
  • Leslie - A dim-witted frog with hypochondria. ("Quick, check my pulse! I think I have rigor mortis!!")
  • Truman - A cute and naive young duck. ("Hey, come back with Mr. Ralph's nose, Oscar!")
  • Oscar - Truman's pet dachshund. The only animal in the strip who acts like an animal.
  • The Cow - A psychotic villain. Suffers from Mad Cow Disease. ("Moo! Mayday! Moo! William Shatner's trying to come outta my head! He's overacting inside my head! Oh, the pain, the pain! There's a gremlin on the wing!")
  • Khan - An dour, enormous catfish that defies Julius' attempts to catch him.
  • Mike - A raccoon with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
  • Frank Cho - Creator of the strip. Appears in the strip as a chimp to break the fourth wall. ("Everything is funnier with monkeys.")
