Lewis is a town located in Lewis County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 857. The Town of Lewis is on the south border of the county.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Oneida County, New York. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 168.7 km² (65.2 mi²). 167.5 km² (64.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.69% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 857 people, 296 households, and 224 families residing in the town. The population density is 5.1/km² (13.2/mi²). There are 440 housing units at an average density of 2.6/km² (6.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.30% White, 0.35% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 296 households out of which 43.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.4% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% are non-families. 19.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.33. In the town the population is spread out with 32.8% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.5 males.
