Leroy HomerLeRoy Wilton Homer Jr. (? – September 11, 2001) was the pilot of United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed into a reclaimed coal-mining area near Stonycreek and Shanksville on September 11, 2001. He grew up on Long Island in New York where he always dreamed of flying. In 1987 he graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with the rank of captain. He served as a C-141 pilot from 1988 to 1995 including flying during the Persian Gulf War. In 1999 he achieved the rank of major. He married Melode on May 24, 1998 and his first child, Laurel was born in late 2000. On September 11, 2001, Homer Jr. was the co-pilot of United Airlines Flight 93. He was either killed or critically injured when stabbed by the hijackers. The hijacked plane later crashed after the passengers tried to regain control of the plane. Homer was posthumously awarded an honorary membership in the historic Tuskegee Airmen.
