Leighton is a city located in Mahaska County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 153.

Geography

Leighton is located at 41°20'19" North, 92°47'12" West (41.338530, -92.786800). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²). 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 153 people, 56 households, and 43 families residing in the city. The population density is 738.4/km² (2,004.7/mi²). There are 59 housing units at an average density of 284.8/km² (773.0/mi²). Everybody in town is white. There are 56 households out of which nineteen have children under the age of 18 living with them, forty-two are married couples living together, none have a female householder with no husband present, and thirteen are non-families. Thirteen of all households are made up of individuals and nine have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.21. In the city the population is spread out with 48 people (27 boys and 21 girls) under the age of 18 and 105 people (54 men and 51 women) aged 18 or over, including nine from 18 to 24, thirty-nine from 25 to 44, thirty-one from 45 to 64, and twenty-six who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. The median income for a household in the city is $46,667, and the median income for a family is $46,667. Males have a median income of $33,750 versus $25,833 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,294. Nobody in town is below the poverty line.
