Large File SupportTraditionally, many operating systems used 32 bit integers to represent positions in a file. Since the number was treated as signed, this allowed for files to grow to 2^31 bits, or 2 gigabytes. This was acceptable for a long time, but eventually the need for bigger and bigger files overcame this limitation. Large file support is the term given to support for files bigger than 2 gigabytes.
