Lanyon High SchoolLanyon High School is an Australian secondary school which serves the Lanyon Valley, Canberra and surrounding rural areas. In 2005 the total school population is 750, down from 830 in 2004. The fall can be attributed to slowing growth in the Lanyon Valley. The principal is Mr Michael Hall and Deputy is Mrs Glenys Patulny. While the school has no dedicated policy on harassment and bullying, it is generally considered one of the better high schools in Canberra. The school operates on a split timetable with juniors (years 7 & 8) and seniors (years 9 & 10) having lunch and recess at different times. The school has many special programmes including a greenhouse, debating teams, and various music and dance groups. Recent events After a student sent a text message to a student at another school, a number of events led to the school coming under attack from two other Canberra high schools. Teachers acted quickly to stop students from Mackillop College and Kambah High School from attacking the school at lunchtimes, but the situation worsened at the Lanyon Market Place where a group (estimated at between 200 and 400) of students from these schools converged. Police were called, and over thirty officers broke up the group before anything happened. Earlier in the year, the Commonwealth Bank gave Lanyon High school a grant of US$ 3,000 to set up a small business.
