Lakewood, OhioLakewood is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 56,646. Geography Lakewood is located at 41°28'51" North, 81°48'1" West (41.480881, -81.800360). This is about 6 miles west of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.4 km² (6.7 mi²). 14.4 km² (5.6 mi²) of it is land and 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.16% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 56,646 people, 26,693 households, and 12,545 families residing in the city. The population density is 3,940.7/km² (10,208.5/mi²). There are 28,416 housing units at an average density of 1,976.8/km² (5,121.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.07% White, 1.97% African American, 0.25% Native American, 1.41% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 2.66% from two or more races. 2.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 26,693 households out of which 23.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.0% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 53.0% are non-families. 43.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 3.03. In the city the population is spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 37.2% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $40,527, and the median income for a family is $53,433. Males have a median income of $38,513 versus $30,370 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,945. 8.9% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.7% of those under the age of 18 and 8.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Attractions Lakewood's Gold Coast, along Edgewater Drive, is a small, densely populated neighborhood of luxury high-rise apartment buildings. Lakewood Park, Lake Road at Belle Avenue, offers beautiful views of Lake Erie and of downtown Cleveland. The Rocky River Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks System forms part of the city's western border. Lakewood Public Library has won numerous awards and has several branches throughout the city. The Beck Center for the Arts is the largest cultural arts center in Northeast Ohio and showcases numerous theatrical productions, concerts, events, activities and art shows.
