Lake Purdy, AlabamaLake Purdy is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in Shelby County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the community is 5,799. Geography Lake Purdy is located at 33°25'43" North, 86°41'35" West (33.428571, -86.693028). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.99% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,799 people, 2,789 households, and 1,327 families residing in the community. The population density is 748.8/km² (1,936.7/mi²). There are 3,044 housing units at an average density of 393.1/km² (1,016.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 86.62% White, 7.78% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 4.14% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 3.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,789 households out of which 24.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.9% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 52.4% are non-families. 42.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.08 and the average family size is 2.98. In the community the population is spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 14.4% from 18 to 24, 43.8% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 3.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 104.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.6 males. The median income for a household in the community is $54,349, and the median income for a family is $91,989. Males have a median income of $49,792 versus $32,188 for females. The per capita income for the community is $39,019. 3.5% of the population and 0.2% of families are below the poverty line.
