In chemistry, the condensation of an alcohol group and a carboxylic acid group which are attached to the same molecule, leads to a cyclic ester. This cyclic ester is called lactone. Here is an example of a very common lactone: D-Glucono-delta-lactone It is formed by the enzyme glucoseoxidase (beta-D-Glucose:FAD-oxidoreducase EC 1.1.3.4)
