La Vergne, TennesseeLa Vergne is a city located in Rutherford County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,687. La Vergne lies within the Murfreesboro, Tennessee metropolitan area. La Vergne has traditionally been a working-class industrial town, especially since the establishment of the "Interchange City" industrial agglomeration on the west side of the city. However, in more recent years, the exponential growth of the Nashville area has given La Vergne a more upper-middle class, suburban feel. Geography La Vergne is located at 36°0'48" North, 86°33'46" West (36.013330, -86.562682). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 65.0 km² (25.1 mi²). 64.2 km² (24.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.20% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,687 people, 6,536 households, and 5,189 families residing in the city. The population density is 290.9/km² (753.7/mi²). There are 6,994 housing units at an average density of 108.9/km² (282.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 84.50% White, 11.02% African American, 0.43% Native American, 1.32% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.28% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 3.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,536 households out of which 46.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.9% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.6% are non-families. 15.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.17. In the city the population is spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 38.9% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $51,478, and the median income for a family is $55,226. Males have a median income of $35,743 versus $26,323 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,580. 4.8% of the population and 4.1% of families are below the poverty line.
