La Gazza Ladra

La gazza ladra, otherwise known as The Thieving Magpie, is an opera and overture by Gioacchino Rossini. It was written in 1817 and the overture is notable for its significant use of snare drums. The story begins with a young girl, who attends a boarding school, about to be executed (by beheading) for stealing a silver spoon; yet, as events unfold (in retrospective or "flashback" fashion), it becomes clear that a magpie actually flew in an open window and stole the spoon, accounting for the opera's title. The overture, which has four distinct "movements," (the first and last in the key of F Major and the intervening two in G Major) makes a few appearances in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, and has also provided the background score for many television and radio commercials.
