Kyungpook National University (KNU) was founded in the spirit of truth, pride, and service: pursuing truth through academic study; developing pride as a member of the University and future leader; and inspiring service towards the modernization and development of society based on the skills acquired through university life. The primary aims of the University are to offer education for those who desire to make significant contributions to society, provide them with knowledge in their major fields, and encourage them in independent thinking and research. The University also seeks to nurture in all students a deeper understanding of humanity and nature, a broader perspective regarding social phenomena, and a creative and imaginative outlook on life. The University has 13 colleges and 9 graduate schools with 18,610 students enrolled on bachelors degrees, 4,361 on master s degrees, and 1,035 students studying for Ph.D.s. as of April 2002. The University has 825 professors and 593 staff. To foster an educational and research environment, the University also supports 20 auxiliary educational facilities and 54 research institutes. The University takes pride in its extensive and active alumni, many of whom are currently in leadership positions throughout Korean society. The University is also concentrating its efforts to become a leading academic institution in the 21st century by contributing on the community, regional, national, and international level towards a better future.
