Kukarka

Kukarka (Кукарка) (now Sovetsk (Советск)) was a settlement (слобода) in Vyatka Guberniya, Imperial Russia (now Kirov Oblast), where Vyacheslav Molotov was born. Its first references are from 1594. In 1918 Kukarka was renamed as the "workers' settlement of Sovetsk". Sovetsk gained the status of town in 1937. The origins of the name are uncertain. Attempts have been made trace it to either Udmurt (kar = "town") or Turkic (kukar = "burned-away forest"). It is not related to the Russian word kukharka (cook-woman).
