kuchum

Kuchum khan (Tatar: Km, Russian: Кучум; in Native Siberian dialect Km is pronounced as /kytsym/, English name comes from standart Tatar pronounciation) (? - ca. 1598) was the last khan of Siberian Khanate. Kuchum was the son of prince Mortaza from the Shayban dynasty (Şyban). In 1554 he contested the throne of Siberian Khanate against Yadegar (Ydegr) and Bekbulat, vassals of Ivan IV of Russia. In 1563 Yadegar was defeated (and fled or was killed), Kuchum assumed the throne. In 1573 Kuchum conducted a raid on Perm. In 1582 Siberian Khanate was attacked by Cossack ataman Yermak, capturing the capital Qashliq. After death of Yermak in 1585, Kuchum regained control of Qashliq. Kuchum attempted to unite the rival factions within the khanate nobility but met with resistance. After an unsuccessful attempt on his life by Qarachi Sayet khan (Syet), Kuchum was forced to move his horde to the steppe south of Irtysh river. There he attempted to establish a new khanate, engaging in war against Russian governors. In 1598 he was defeated by governor Voyeykov, escaped to Nogay Horde, where was killed. Kuchum is characted in numerous Tatar and Russian songs and legends.
