Komboli

Komboloi is a Greek fidget toy, used to relieve stress and generally pass time. The word is formed from the greek words "kombos" (κόμπος) which means "knot" and "loi" (λόι) which describes a group of things.

History

There are a few theories for the origin of komboloi
  • It is derived from komboskoini, which is a string of knots prayer.
  • It was imported from Asia Minor, during the 1922 population exchange.
  • It was used to mock Turks during the Turk occupation of Greece, mimicking the 40 prayer beads the Turks were using.
  • It was imposed on Greeks to remind them not to shake hands,
