Kingwood Township, New Jersey

Kingwood Township is a township located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 3,782.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 92.7 km² (35.8 mi²). 91.2 km² (35.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.65% water. Kingwood Township borders Frenchtown Borough, Alexandria Township, Franklin Township, and Delaware Township. Kingwood Township also borders the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Hisory

Kingwood Township was founded in 1746. It is famous for the local captain who rounded up the boats for George Washington's crossing of the Delaware during the American Revolution.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,782 people, 1,340 households, and 1,042 families residing in the township. The population density is 41.4/km² (107.4/mi²). There are 1,422 housing units at an average density of 15.6/km² (40.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.62% White, 0.61% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,340 households out of which 38.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.9% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% are non-families. 17.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.21. In the township the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 102.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.3 males. The median income for a household in the township is $71,551, and the median income for a family is $81,642. Males have a median income of $54,107 versus $31,326 for females. The per capita income for the township is $30,219. 2.9% of the population and 2.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.1% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
