Kings Mountain, North CarolinaKings Mountain is a city located in North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,693. Originally the settlement was called White Plains, but when the city was incorporated in 1874, the name was changed. It was decided that Kings Mountain would be a more appropriate name since the community was the closest town to the historic Battle of King's Mountain. Geography Kings Mountain is located at 35°14'39" North, 81°20'33" West (35.244105, -81.342544). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.2 km² (8.2 mi²). None of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,693 people, 3,821 households, and 2,674 families residing in the city. The population density is 458.1/km² (1,187.1/mi²). There are 4,064 housing units at an average density of 192.1/km² (497.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 74.85% White, 21.55% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.81% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 1.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,821 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% are married couples living together, 17.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 26.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.98. In the city the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $31,415, and the median income for a family is $39,137. Males have a median income of $32,444 versus $22,201 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,920. 19.2% of the population and 13.4% of families are below the poverty line.
