Kiln, Mississippi

Kiln is a census-designated place located in Hancock County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,040. Today, it is best known as the hometown of Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

Geography

Kiln is located at 30°24'46" North, 89°26'8" West (30.412874, -89.435417). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 34.9 km² (13.5 mi²). 34.5 km² (13.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.97% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,040 people, 782 households, and 570 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 59.1/km² (153.1/mi²). There are 987 housing units at an average density of 28.6/km² (74.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.98% White, 2.60% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 782 households out of which 34.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% are non-families. 20.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.03. In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.4 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $38,125, and the median income for a family is $40,893. Males have a median income of $32,768 versus $21,850 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,351. 21.1% of the population and 19.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.2% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
