Kerry Prendergast

Kerry Prendergast has served as the Mayor of Wellington since 2001. Before entering politics, Prendergast worked as a midwife and a nurse. She gained election to the Tawa Borough Council (now integrated into Wellington city) in 1986, and joined the Wellington City Council in 1989. In 1995, she became Deputy Mayor under Mark Blumsky. Prendergast attempted to enter Parliament in the 1999 elections, standing in 30th place on the National Party's list, but did not gain a seat. In 2001, Prendergast had considered making another attempt on the national political scene, but when Blumsky announced his retirement, she instead opted to pursue the mayoralty with his endorsement. She became Mayor in the 2001 local-body election, and in October 2004 gained re-election for a second term. Prendergast, Kerry Prendergast, Kerry
