Kelvin GoertzenKelvin Goertzen (born June 12, 1969) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He is currently a member of the Manitoba legislature. Goertzen has Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from the University of Manitoba. Prior to running for elected office himself, he worked as Executive Assistant to MLAs Jim Penner and Albert Driedger. He is also Vice-President of the Steinbach Arts Council and served as Vice-President of the Southeast Helping Hands Food Bank for seven years. When Steinbach MLA Jim Penner withdrew from politics before the 2003 provincial election, Goertzen sought and attained the Progressive Conservative nomination in the riding. The nomination process was marked by controversy: Goertzen had signed up about 150 new party members to support a possible candidacy before Penner's resignation was announced, and the local party association subsequently froze new memberships before other candidates could organize. This controversy had little influence on the election result, however. Steinbach is an extremely safe seat for the Progressive Conservatives, and Goertzen was elected with over 74% of its popular vote, despite the poor showing of PC candidates elsewhere in the province. Goertzen was appointed Justice Critic after the election, and has quickly become one of his party's most vocal new MLAs. In 2003, Goertzen participated in a public protest against gay marriage.
