Kay Bailey Hutchison

Kay Bailey Hutchison (born July 22 1943) is the senior United States Senator from Texas. She is a member of the Republican Party. Her name at birth was Kathryn Ann Bailey. She was born in Galveston, Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas in 1962 and received her J.D. from U. Texas in 1967. Following her graduation from law school, she was the legal & political correspondent for KPRC-TV. In 1972 she was elected to the Texas State House of Representatives, of which she was a member until 1976. She was vice-chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board from 1976 to 1978. She was a candidate for election to the United States House of Representatives in 1982, but she was defeated by Democrat Steve Bartlett. She temporarily left politics and became a successful bank executive and businesswoman. She was elected Texas State Treasurer in 1991 and served until 1993 when she was elected to the United States Senate in a June 1993 special election (with 65%) following the resignation of Democrat Lloyd Bentsen to take a cabinet post in the Clinton administration. She was elected to a full term in 1994 (with 61%) and reelected in 2000 (with 65%). It is speculated that she will either run for reelection or run for Governor of Texas in 2006; if choosing the latter route, she will have to run against current Governor Rick Perry in the Republican primary. In a CNN interview in February 2005, Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman nominated for Vice President from a major party, said she expected Hutchinson to run for President on the Republican ticket in 2008.
