Kavaj

Kavaj (Albanian: Kavaj or Kavaja) is a city in western Albania (41.20 degrees North, 19.56 degrees East), the centre of the District of Kavaj. It lies at the height of 8 m from the sea level. The population is 28,200 inhabitants (2003); the 10th rank in Albania. In the District of Kavaj there are 78,415 inhabitants (according to the 2001 census). The area of the District is 393 square kilometers. The Italian name of Kavaj is Cavaia. 95% of the population are Muslims. During the disorders of 1997 Kavaj was the only part of Albania that remained peaceful. This was due to patrols formed privately on the basis of religious authority.
