Kaur

Kaur meaning Princess is widely used by females in the Sikh community as their surname. It was made mandatory by the tenth Sikh guru Guru Gobind Singh for females to adopt Kaur as their surname. This was done in order to get rid of the caste system that was prevalent during his time (17th century).
