Katsu KaishuKatsu Kaishu (勝 海舟 Katsu Kaishū, 1823-99) was a stateman in Japan in the late shogunate period who held an important part in the Tokugawa shogunate in rare occasions. He is particularly known for his role in the surrender of Edo. Kaishu was not his courtesy name. Born in Edo in a family of Hatamoto, Kaishu served to the Tokugawa shogunate. After the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, he was given a high official post in the Meiji new government.
