Kathoey/tempKathoey (in Thai กะเทย) are the male-to-female transgendered people of Thailand. Unlike many Western countries, where transsexuals and transsexual rights are just beginning to emerge, kathoey are much more widely accepted as women in Thai culture. Some believe this is due to the nature of the surrounding Buddhist culture, which accepts change as part of life. Many Kathoey take female hormones at a young age to begin their transition.
