Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary or Carlsbad (German: Karlsbad), the city and spa situated in the western part of the Czech Republic. The city is named after Charles IV, who visited the place in the 1370s. It is historically famous for its hot springs (13 main and about 300 other smaller springs, the biggest and hottest at 73C being Vrdlo, known in German as der Sprudel) and for its warm-water river, the Tepl. The city is perhaps better known today for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Karlovy Vary is also where the popular Czech liqueur Karlovarsk Becherovka is produced and bottled. The city become infamous within Czech Republic as holiday resort and investment target of Russian mafians.
