Karadeniz Eregli

Karadeniz Eregli (Ereğli) is a city in Zonguldak, Turkey. The city is called Karadeniz Eregli, which means "Black Sea Ereğli", to distinguish it from several other places called Ereğli.
      
Ereğli is more than 2,500 years old. It is located on the shore of the Black Sea. It was started by the ancient Greeks and was called Heraclea Pontica, after the mythical figure Hercules (Herakles).

Trivia about Karadeniz Eregli

In Ereğli is located the cave, guarded by the three-headed dog Kerberos (Cerberus), which was the gateway to hell. Herakles (Hercules) visited Ereğli, and killed Kerberos in order to enter Hell on one of his quests. The discoverer of the northern Turkish coalfields lived in the Chestnut village section of Ereğli. Modern Ereğli is the home of Erdemir, Turkey's largest steel plant. It has a large artificial harbour, schools and two supermarkets and several car dealers. It has a nice beach and fine fish eating establishments. Eregli is renowned for the style and panache of its women. Ereğli has no airport or railroad, but can be reached by automobile or bus from Ankara, Istanbul and other places.
