Kamran Shirdel

Kamran Shirdel, a renowned Iranian documentarist, was born in 1939 in Tehran, studied architecture and urbanism at Rome University and film direction at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia of Rome, graduating in 1964. He worked as an assistant director with John Huston on "The Bible", then made his diploma film in Rome: "Gli Specchi" (The Mirrors). He returned to Iran in 1965, starting a brilliant though difficult career. Among his films which were banned and confiscated for many years: "NEDAMATGAH" ("Women's Prison"), "Qaleh" ("Women's Quarter"), "Tehran is the Capital of Iran" and the award-winning "The Night It Rained". In 2002 he made the documentary film "Solitude Opus 1" He is the founder and director of the Kish International Documentary Film Festival which is held yearly in the January on the island of Kish in the Persian Gulf.
