Kafiristan

Kafiristan ("land of the infidels") was a region in Afghanistan whose inhabitants maintained a wild independence until they were subdued by the amir Abdur Rahman Khan in 1896. They were then converted to Islam and the region became known as Nuristan ("land of the enlightened").
