K-pax

K-PAX is the name given to a series of books written by Gene Brewer:
  1. K-PAX
  2. K-PAX II: On a Beam of Light
  3. K-PAX III: Worlds of Prot
The books deal with the experiences on Earth of a man named "prot" (rhymes with "goat", and is not capitalised). prot claims to be from a far away planet called K-PAX, where sex is unpleasant, eating meat is never considered, and there are no laws, governments, or schools. In the 2001 film K-PAX, based on the trilogy, Kevin Spacey portrays prot. The story opens with prot attempting to help a woman in distress, but his assistance is misunderstood and he quickly finds himself under psychiatric observation. He is treated by a Manhattan psychiatrist, Mark Powell (played by Jeff Bridges in the motion picture adaptation) who is tasked with "curing" prot of his supposed delusions.
