Justin Fashanu

Justin Fashanu (February 19 1961 - May 2 1998) was an English footballer, who committed suicide in 1998. He was a controversial figure: apart from being black, he was the first prominent player in English football to come out as a homosexual. This brought him some opprobrium. In his suicide note, he cited the fact that he felt that he would be unfairly pre-judged as guilty of allegations that he had abused a teenage boy in America, where he had been working as a coach following his retirement from the professional game. His younger brother, John Fashanu, was also a footballer, who has allegations of homosexuality surrounding him (also alleged against his thinly veiled fictional counterpart in the camp television drama Footballers Wives).
