Binomial name
Bothrops nummifer
Rppell, 1845
The Jumping Viper (Bothrops nummifer) is a short snake, roughly 60 cm (two feet) in length but growing up to 120 cm, with a thicker girth than a typical snake of its dimensions. It has a hide that varies in hue from brown to gray, and with a darker, diamond-like pattern of dark brown or black dorsal marks. The habitat of this creature is the Central American region from southern Mexico to Panama. This snake attacks with a powerful thrust that can lift it off the ground, often by a few feet. Thus the reason for its name. The bite is hemotoxic, and can be lethal to a human. It is primarily a nocturnal animal, and feeds on small creatures such as frogs, rodents, and lizards. They tend to hide under the foliage or other cover, making them difficult to spot.
