Julio Anguita

Julio Anguita Gonzlez (born 1941). Spanish politician and a former teacher. Mayor of Crdoba between 1979 and 1988, was chosen General Secretary of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) in 1988. Later he became leader of the leftist coallition Izquierda Unida (IU, "United Left"). He was a member of the Cortes between 1989 and 2000, during which period Izquierda Unida improved its electoral results, obtaining in 1996 10%. He resigned as General Secretary of the PCE for health reasons in 1998. His son, Julio Anguita Parrado, was an embedded journalist among US troops in the 2003 invasion of Iraq and was killed by Iraqi fire. Anguita, Julio
