Josep Llus Sert

Josep Llus Sert (1902 - 1983) was a Catalan Spanish architect. He was born in Barcelona with the complete name Josep Llus Sert i Lpez. As a child he showed already interest in the works of Gaud and of his uncle, the painter Josep Maria Sert. He studied at the Barcelona School of Architecture. In 1952 Sert held a one-year visiting professorship at Yale University. The following year he became the dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he stayed until 1969. While at Harvard, Sert established in 1955 an architectural agency together with some associates. They worked on projects all over the country, including office, public, retail and residential buildings. In the neighbourhood of Harvard University Sert designed several of his most famous buildings. Even in that northern locale, some have seen a mediterranean quality in his work.
