Jor-elJor-El is a fictional character from DC Comics, the father of the superhero Superman. He was a highly respected scientist on the planet Krypton before its destruction - a fate which he foresaw, but was unable to convince his colleagues of in time to save their race. Jor-El was, however, able to save his infant son Kal-El, sending him in a home-made rocket ship to the less-doomed planet Earth, where he used his alien powers to become Superman. Because DC Comics has revised the Superman back-story several times, and because of different interpretations in television and film, the details of Jor-El's history (such as what he was like as a person, why his colleagues doubted his findings, whether he deliberately chose Earth as his son's new home, and why he did not attempt to escape Krypton himself) vary from story to story. Jor-El has appeared (usually briefly) in various screen adaptations of the Superman story. He was portrayed by Nelson Leigh in the 1948 Superman movie serial, by Marlon Brando in the movie Superman, by George Lazenby in the Superboy television series, by Christopher McDonald in , and by Terence Stamp in the television series Smallville. In Smallville, Clark Kent realizes that he was sent to Earth not to be saved from the certain destruction of Krypton, but he was sent to Earth to conquer. He discovers this in the Second Season of the show. The idea was that Krypton blew themselves up with nuclear weapons, so he was to conquer Earth before we blew ourselves up. Jor-El in the Smallville show is far different than in the comic books.
