John Lyng

John Lyng (August 22, 1905 - January 18, 1978) was a Norwegian politician from the Conservative Party. He was Prime Minister of Norway in from August 28 to September 25, 1963. His brief time as prime minister came after the two representatives from the Socialist Left Party (at that time called the Socialist Peoples' Party) joined a slim 76-74 no confidence vote against the labor cabinet of Einar Gerhardsen following a scandal over a mining accident at King's Bay at Svalbard. The socialist vote of no confidence was merely a protest and demonstration, and the labor government was restored a month later. Although the John Lyng government failed to govern for more than a month it did prove that the non-socialist parties were capable of making a coalition, and after the parliamentary elections in 1965 the non-socialists returned to power with Per Borten as prime minister, and John Lyng as foreign minister.
