John Kirk

John Kirk was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Details

He was approx. 29 years old, and a Private in the 10th Regiment (later The Lincolnshire Regiment), British Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 4 June 1857 at Benares, India, Private Kirk volunteered, with two sergeant-majors (Peter Gill and Matthew Rosamund) to go to the rescue of a paymaster and his family who were surrounded by rebels in the compound of their house. At the risk of his own life, the rescue was successfully accomplished.
