John Hattendorf

John B. Hattendorf is a professor and the chairman of the maritime history department at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He was a U.S. Navy officer with combat experience at sea in destroyers. He is the author of numerous books on British and American maritime history and naval warfare, including America and the Sea: A Maritime History, and War at Sea in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and an exhibition catalog for the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University, The Boundless Deep: The European Conquest of the Oceans, 14501840. His doctorate in war history is from the University of Oxford. Hattendorf co-authored The Oxford Illustrated History of Modern War with Richard Holmes (military historian) and other authors. Since 1988 he has directed the Advanced Research Department in the Center for Naval Warfare Studies at the U.S. Naval War College. In 2000, the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England awarded Hattendorf the Caird Medal for his contributions to the field of maritime history. Hattendorf, John
