John Flansburgh

John Flansburgh (b. 1960) is seventeen thirty-fourths of the rock band that is They Might Be Giants, for which he plays guitar, keyboard, and drums and sings. Some side projects include his band Mono Puff; directing music videos for such artists and bands as Soul Coughing, Ben Folds Five, Frank Black and the Catholics, Harvey Danger, and TMBG themselves; producing albums and EPs, notably Muckafurgason's eponymous album; and writing the music for the Broadway musical People Are Wrong. John Flansburgh is under six feet tall, with dark brown eyes and black hair. He is near-sighted, and generally wears corrective lenses for the condition. He has no acknowleged children, and as of 2005, was married to a singer named Robin Goldwasser, with whom he sometimes performs. He is famous for favoring casual clothes when performing, including plaid shirts. He sings more effectively in contralto and falsetto than his counterpart, John Linnell, and has a rounder tone, but plays fewer instruments than Linnell. He favors absurbist or satirical lyrics, and borrows musical styles liberally from various eras and performers. He often "emcees" performances, announcing the songs, and engaging in banter with Mr. Linnell or other bandmembers. He is very good at impromptu entertaining, with offerings such as "Spin The Dial," in which he turns the tuner of a real radio on-stage, picks a song, and as the band improvises musically, extemporaneously makes up a lyric or imitates the singing style of the performer he picked. Mr. Flansburgh is a high energy person and tends to be involved in several projects at once, often acting as a prima mobila for new band projects. He once described himself as a manic depressive without the depression.
