John BrashearJohn Alfred Brashear (November 24,1840 – April 8,1920) was an American scientist and instrument builder. He worked as a wheelright in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and pursued his love for astronomy at night, with the help of his wife Phoebe. After building his first telescope, which took him 10 years, he began a career in designing and building astronomical instruments. He founded "John Brashear Co." and his instruments gained worldwide respect. The company is now known as "Contraves Corp." He was director of the Allegheny Observatory from 1898 until 1900. His ashes and those of his wife are buried in a crypt at that observatory. A plaque on the crypt reads: "We have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night." A crater on Mars was named in his honor. External links Brashear, John Brashear, John
