John Bayley

John Bayley (CBE 1999) was born in Lahore. Between 1974 and 1992 he was Warton Professor of English at Oxford. He is also a novelist and a critic. In 1956 he married Iris Murdoch. After Iris's death he married Audi Villers, a family friend. He edited Henry James's The Wings of the Dove. In the film Iris he was portrayed in his early years by Hugh Bonneville and in his later years by Jim Broadbent.
